I am the founder and lead attorney of Jennifer B. James, P.C. As an attorney, I specialize in family law — divorce, child custody, support and related matters. I also handle criminal defense for clients charged in Colorado with driving under the influence, driving while ability impaired or traffic infractions.
As a family lawyer, I’m strongly influenced by my background as a child and family educator. As an undergraduate, I worked with young children from infancy through six years old. After finishing school, I worked as a teacher in the federal Head Start program, helping young parents adjust to the demands of raising a child while working toward a diploma. Thanks to that experience, I understand the pressures that young families face and how conflict in a family can affect its youngest members. I will work my hardest to help my clients resolve their legal matters with the minimum possible emotional and financial strain. I believe strongly that the best divorce settlements are the ones the spouses write themselves, with help from a mediator or arbitrator if necessary.
I also practice criminal defense law, concentrating mainly on defending clients accused of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving while ability impaired and other traffic violations.
Before opening my own Colorado Springs law office in 2005, I served the Texas State Legislature as a Health Policy Fellow from the University Of Texas School Of Public Health, where I had the privilege of drafting legislation and advocating on health issues. I have also completed coursework and research towards a Master’s in Public Health.
I received my law degree at the University of Houston and my undergraduate degree in Child Development and Family Relationships at the University of Texas. In my spare time, I enjoy the many outdoor recreation opportunities provided by life in the gorgeous Rocky Mountain foothills.
